How to Make a Coffee Corset

The coffee corset is a craft accessory that wraps around a cup, flask or thermos to insulate its contents and prevent your hands from getting burnt. Further, the coffee corset is an environmentally friendly answer to the cardboard coffee cup protectors that come with hot drinks from large coffee chains. The corset can be made of almost any material but typically features felt, which helps to absorb heat. You can make your own coffee corset at home with fabric, grommets and some basic sewing materials.

Things You'll Need

Measuring tape
1/2 yard of fabric
1/2 a yard of felt
Fabric chalk
Ruler
Sewing scissors
Sewing pins
Sewing machine
Ribbon

Instructions

  Measure the distance around the middle of your flask, thermos or coffee cup with the measuring tape and then subtract one inch.

  Lay the fabric and the felt on a flat surface in front of you. Draw a rectangle shape the length of the measurement you just calculated by 4 inches in width on the fabric with fabric chalk.

  Subtract one inch from the length and width of the rectangle you just drew. Draw a rectangle with these dimensions on the felt.

  Cut your rectangle shapes out with sewing scissors.

  Place the right side of the fabric rectangle downwards on your flat surface. Center the felt rectangle on top of it.

  Cut diagonally in a 45-degree angle across each corner of the fabric rectangle. This will allow the fabric of the coffee corset to be hemmed cleanly on each edge.

  Fold the 1/2 inch of excess fabric around the felt rectangle inwards on each side and pin into place with sewing pins.

  Sew along each edge of the coffee corset with your sewing machine.

  Place the grommets evenly along the two short edges of your rectangle according to the specific instructions in the grommet packaging.

  Thread the ribbon through the grommets from top to bottom in a pattern of your choosing.

  Place the complete coffee corset around your coffee cup, thermos or flask, tighten the ribbon and tie it in a bow to secure.
