How to Applique Bias Strips

Bias strips have an elasticity that allows them to be shaped into curves and patterns. You can even use them to create elaborate Celtic knot designs. Bias tape is made by folding the side edges of bias strips into the center to create a band with a straight edge. For a subtle effect, use bias tape cut from the same fabric as the background. White bias tape will add a lovely texture to a white blouse without making it any less versatile.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the bias strip right side down on an ironing board. Fold the edges of the long sides in to the center. Measure the folds on each side to be sure they are even. Iron the folds flat to create a straight edge on each side.

    • 2

Pin the bias tape to the fabric with the folds on the underside. You may trace a pattern onto the fabric or pin the tape on freehand.

    • 3

Thread a sewing machine with thread that matches the bias tape. Set the machine to sew a straight strip with a stitch length of 12 stitches per inch.

    • 4

Sew along one edge of the bias tape one-sixth inch from the folded edge. Remove the pins as you sew.

    • 5

Sew the other edge down in the same way.
