How to Make an Embroidered Tattered Patch

An embroidered patch is a wonderful way to personalize clothing and accessories. Replace a jean pocket with a monogram embroidered patch for a chic and unexpected detail. Add an embroidered patch to a jacket sleeve to show your pride for a local fire department, club or group affiliation. A tattered piece of fabric can be used for the base of your embroidered patch for a rugged, tough girl look. Woven fabric works best for the tattered look as knits will only curl.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a square or rectangular shape from the fabric, 1 inch larger on all sides than the desired size of the finished patch.

    • 2

Place the patch in the bowl of water and allow it to soak for 15 minutes.

    • 3

Remove the patch from the water and pick the edges of the patch with your fingers, separating the yarns from the patch. Pull off a few yarns from each side of the patch.

    • 4

Cut 2 1/2-inch snips from each of the four sides of the patch. The snips should be centered on each side.

    • 5

Put the patch in the dryer for 10 minutes. The patch should now be tattered and frayed on the outer edges.

    • 6

Select your embroidery type from the machine's selection and load the machine with the desired color or colors of thread.

    • 7

Place your patch underneath the embroidery machine and either press the button or press the foot to begin the embroidery, depending on your embroidery machine type.

    • 8

Allow the machine to finish the embroidery then lift the foot and clip and connected threads.

    • 9

Apply the patch to a garment, bag or accessory.
