How to Oil a Singer Featherweight Sewing Machine

The Singer Featherweight sewing machine was marketed as a small sized and portable sewing machine with all the benefits of a larger machine. The machine came with a carrying case that could hold the body of the machine and sewing notions and advertisements boasted of how lightweight the machine was. It was available in three different models; the 221, 221-1 and the 221K and was manufactured from 1933 to 1968.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cord from the machine to make sure there is no power coming into the machine and that it does not get damaged or in the way while completing the oiling process.

    • 2

Clean the machine, removing any lint or dust that has built up inside of and around the motor. The lint or dust will absorb the oil and create friction that will wear down the parts and cause the machine not to work properly.

    • 3

Apply one drop of sewing machine oil to the lower right hand side of the bobbin. If you imagine a clock, this drop needs to be placed at about 4 o̵7;clock on the bobbin casing.

    • 4

Turn the spool pin assembly and place one drop of oil in each of the three holes underneath.

    • 5

Drip one drop at each of the tiny holes along the back side of the machine. These holes are located at the underside of the bobbin winder, one at the top of the bobbin winder, two on the sewing machine housing just above the motor and three holes near the top right, close to the pressure regulating screw.

    • 6

Tip the machine onto its front side gently.

    • 7

Remove the cover plate from the bottom of the machine.

    • 8

Place one drop of oil at each of the 13 places that metal touches metal along the gears assembly, being careful not to oil the gears.

    • 9

Replace the cover and set the machine back upright.

    • 10

Remove the thumb nut and felt washer that holds the cover plate on the left side of the machine in place. Dislodge the cover plate gently.

    • 11

Apply one drop of oil to each of the 11 places where two pieces of metal touch each other. There are six on the back of the needle assembly and five on the front side of the needle assembly. Do not apply the oil directly to the gears.
