How to Oil a Drop In Bobbin Sewing Machine

To get good performance from your drop-in bobbin sewing machine and to keep it running smoothly, you need to stay on top of its maintenance. The most important part of sewing machine upkeep is oiling the moving parts, especially the bobbin case. The upper oiling points of most machines are marked with colored dots about the size of a pinhead, but bobbin case oiling points are not marked. You need to remove the drop-in bobbin before you start so you can see the moving parts.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Brush off the sewing machine's upper moving parts, including the top of the bobbin case, to remove lint and dust.

    • 2

Tip the machine back and brush the lint and dust away from the underside of the bobbin case.

    • 3

Apply 3 drops to 4 drops of oil to the gears and the moving portion of the bobbin case's underside. Set the machine back into its upright position.

    • 4

Reach down into the bobbin case from the top of the sewing machine. Place 2 drops of oil along the lower front edge of the bobbin case without getting oil into the thread tension spring.

    • 5

Place 1 drop of oil on each of the remaining marked oiling points and wipe away oily spots on the sewing machine's surface with a clean dry cloth.
