How to Fix Sewing Machine Thread That Won't Feed Around a Bobbin

Troubleshooting a bobbin that will not wind correctly is a simple task. If the machine seems to be operating correctly but the bobbin is not feeding, there is an issue with the thread. Sometimes the thread may not feed because it is wound in the wrong direction or not wound tightly enough around the bobbin before the machine is started. This is an important part of ensuring your thread feeds around the bobbin. Starting the process again but making sure the end of the thread is wound correctly will fix the majority of bobbin winding problems.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any thread completely from the bobbin. Drop the empty bobbin onto the bobbin spindle on your machine. This is on the top right of most machines.

    • 2

Slide the thread onto the other spindle. Push the end of the thread through the tension disk. Some machines may have more than one tension disk, so make sure you feed it through all of them. Holding the thread taut, unwind the spool until it reaches the bobbin.

    • 3

Wind the thread clockwise tightly several times around the bobbin. Continue until the thread will stay wound around the bobbin on its own.

    • 4

Move the bobbin spindle into the winding position. This is typically done by moving it to the right. Press the foot pedal or turn on the machine to activate the winding mechanism. It will shut off automatically when the bobbin is full.

    • 5

Use scissors to cut the thread, and remove the filled bobbin from the spindle.
