How to Make a Millet Pillow

Millet pillows are a relatively new option among different pillow fillings, along with other grain-filled pillows such as buckwheat or flax seed. They provide a soft and contoured support that quickly and easily conforms to the curves of a person's head and shoulders without compacting. Additionally air more easily circulates through a millet pillow, allowing the pillow to breathe, which keeps you cool when it is hot out and warm during cold seasons.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what size pillow you want. Typically millet pillows are used for sleeping, so the dimensions are about 28 inches long by about 18 inches across and 4 to 6 inches deep. A pillow this size should fit in most standard pillow cases.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of cloth to the same dimensions. Measure the material using the tape measure. One piece will be the top and the other will be the bottom of the pillow. Put them together with right sides touching.

    • 3

Sew the two pieces of material together along both long sides and on one of the short ends, leaving one end open. Pin the pieces together using straight pins. Sew the pieces together staying about 1/4 to 1/2 inch away from the outer edge of the cloth. A sewing machine will make this job fast, but you can complete it with a sewing needle and thread. Turn the pillowcase so the right side is now facing out and the seam around the pillow is very clean and neat.

    • 4

Open the end of the pillow that has not been sewn shut. Pour in approximately 5 to 7 lbs. of millet hulls. You do not want to fill the pillow up completely, as this would make closing difficult and the hulls would not have room to move within the pillow in order to conform to the shape of your head.

    • 5

Fold the open end of the pillow case over on itself so there is a flap about 1/2 to 1 inch in width and pin it closed with straight pins. Sew the pillow shut.
