How to Do an Applique Number on a Child's Shirt

Applique patches not only make a child's shirt look cute, they also have a practical use when they're used to cover up a stain on a favorite item of clothing. Whether you're sewing numbers for a sports team or for a special birthday celebration, make the numbers stand out with contrasting colored fabric in both patterns and plains. Applique numbers can go on the front or back of the shirt, or even on the sleeves.

Instructions

    • 1

Print out a large number on plain white paper, or if you have a steady hand, draw a funky-shaped number on a sheet of computer paper. Cut out the paper number and try it for size against the shirt you wish to applique. How big you want the number is a matter of personal preference and the size of child's shirt.

    • 2

Pin the paper number pattern to the fabric you are using as the applique patch. Cut around the pattern.

    • 3

Pin the number to the shirt in the position you want.

    • 4

Stitch around the outside edge of the number on the sewing machine using a zigzag stitch. Choose the medium setting for both the length and width of the stitch.
