Determine the desired size of the scarf. Typical sizes for squared scarves are 24 or 40 inches square. Rectangular scarves are usually 60 or 72 inches long. For a rectangular scarf, also determine the width. It should be less than the length. Cut the fabric for the desired length and width.
Stitch 1/4 inch from the edge using the sewing machine. It should be set to "straight."
Iron the fabric flat. Use a low setting if you are using silk as your fabric.
Create a hand-rolled hem for a more sophisticated look. Weigh the scarf down so that it does not move when you pull on the fabric. Trim the sides as close to the stitch as possible. Start at one corner with a few back stitches so that the thread is anchored. Roll the fabric towards you and continue to stitch the hem using a slip-stitch.
