Things You'll Need
Instructions
Cut the top piece of the placemat, the piece that you want to set your tableware on, and the muslin, both 12 by 16 inches.
Cut the backing fabric 13 by 17 inches.
Thread the machine and load a full bobbin. The thread can match one or both sides of the project or be a contrasting color.
Sew any embellishments or embroidery designs onto the top piece of fabric that you wish. The placements can be monogrammed using a satin stitch for added decoration.
Lay the backing fabric right-side down on your work surface. The right side is the side that will be showing on the back of your finished placemat.
Center the muslin on top of the backing fabric and then lay the top piece of fabric on top of the muslin. Line up the edges of the top piece with the muslin fabric.
Pin all three layers together. If preferred, sew lines diagonally through all three layers of fabric to quilt them together.
Fold over the excess edges of the backing fabric to the top of the placemat on one side.
Fold under 1/4-inch seam allowance of the backing fabric that is now on top of the quilt.
Place the placemat under the needle assembly of your sewing machine anywhere along the middle section of the side and lower the presser foot. It is easier to match up the finishing seams if you do not start on a corner.
Begin sewing slowly and continue until you are approximately 1 inch from the bottom edge of that side. Stop sewing but do not move the project from under the needle.
Fold up the next side of the backing fabric, again turning under 1/4 inch for the seam allowance. Miter the corner as you fold.
Hold the edges in place and continue sewing until you reach the corner you just formed. At the corner, turn the hand wheel on the sewing machine until the needle is in the fabric directly at the corner.
Lift the presser foot and pivot the tablecloth. Sew down the second side of the placemat, repeating the same steps for mitering the corner and sewing the third and fourth sides of the placemat.
