How to Sew a Patch on a Pant Leg With a Sewing Machine

Whether for your favorite pants or your work pants, knowing how to sew a patch can save you money in tailoring or replacement costs. The difficulty with sewing a patch on a pant leg with a sewing machine is keeping the nonpatch side of the leg out of the way. When you turn the pants inside out and sew on a patch, it's going to sew through both the front and back of the pant leg, rendering the pants unwearable. There is a simple solution to this problem.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Turn your pant leg inside out. Locate the area you want to patch and use your seam ripper to open the seam adjacent to the patch. The open seam will allow you to flatten your pant leg and sew it with your machine so the patch only attaches to one side of the pant leg.

    • 2

Measure the area you want to patch. Cut a patch out of closely matching material. Round the edges of the patch to help keep it from unraveling. Pin the patch to the inside of your pant leg.

    • 3

Thread your sewing machine with thread the color of your pants. Stitch the patch around the edges on the inside of the pants, using your machine's straight stitch setting.

    • 4

Turn the pants right side out and, using your machine's zig-zag stitch setting, sew vertical and horizontal rows over the frayed fabric area to strengthen the patch job.

    • 5

Turn the pants inside out again and, using your machine's straight stitch, sew the seam closed.
