Sewing a Padded Pouch Sling

Having both hands free is a luxury most mothers learn to live without, as they so often are carrying their baby. Pouch slings free up both hands, while allowing mothers to still carry a baby close and snug next to them. Many different types of slings are available depending on the child's size and the way the sling will be used. Wrap it many different ways to carry a child on your back, in the front or on your hip.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Wash and machine-dry fabric before sewing so that your sling will not shrink when washed. Iron it to remove any wrinkles.

    • 2

Measure from one hip to the outside of the opposite shoulder. Add 4 inches to the measurement.

    • 3

Trim the fabric so that it is 23 inches wide. Fold it lengthwise and cut the ends starting at 3 inches in at the bottom and curving out to the edge of the fabric. Continue up, curving back in to 3 inches in at the top. Unfold your fabric, which is now a rectangle with curved ends.

    • 4

Use a French seam to attach the curved ends by placing one curve on top of the other with wrong sides together. Sew a 1/4-inch seam along the curve. Iron it open, and then turn the fabric. Sew the curve with right sides together with another 1/4-inch seam.

    • 5

Iron the top edge of the fabric down 1/4 inch, then another 1/4 inch, and stitch to make a hem.

    • 6

Iron the bottom edge under 3/4 inch. Place polyester filling along the ironed edge, and then fold it over the filling and pin it down. Sew along the edge and up the sides to secure the filling. Press and hem the padded edge.
