How to Make a Belt Loop in Sewing

Belt loops are designed to keep belts in place when worn with pants or shorts. If you are making your own pants or simply replacing a damaged belt loop, you will need to follow specific instructions to create a professional-looking loop. If the procedure is not done correctly, your belt loop will have a bulky look. Knowing how to make your own belt loop can help to cut clothing repair costs. To complete this task, you will need to use the right tools and techniques.

Instructions

    • 1

Make an estimate of the length of each belt loop. The length of the belt loop depends on the width of the waistband. Measure the width of the waistband, then multiply it by the number of belt loops that are needed for the waistband. If, for example, you need five loops, leave an extra 5 inches for seam allowances. The width of the material should be twice the width of the belt loop.

    • 2

Fold the strip of material for the belt loop and stitch downward along the edge, using a straight stitch on a sewing machine. The material should now be stitched closed.

    • 3

Turn the stitched fabric inside out, using a crochet needle. Insert the crochet needle inside the fabric. Hook the needle onto the opening of the fabric and pull it through the other end to turn it completely inside out.

    • 4

Lay the stitched fabric down with the seam in the center. Use a warm iron to flatten the fabric. Sew a row of topstitching along each side. The stitches should be even on each side. Cut the belt loops into individual pieces, leaving 1 inch extra for seam allowances.
