Things You'll Need
Instructions
Measure the bed. Barbie has many different beds available and not all sizes are the same. Note the width, length and height of the bed that you are sewing the blanket for. Write down the measurements.
Add 1/2 inch to each measurement for seam allowances. This will give you 1/4 inch for the seams on each side of the fabric.
Find the fabrics you want to use for the blanket. Use leftover fabric, recycle your child's old clothes or purchase new fabric.
Measure and cut the fabric to the dimensions of the bed. Depending on the style of blanket you are making, cut the fabric to cover only the top of the bed, hang down the sides of the bed or have multiple pieces of fabric to sew together to make a more designer looking bedspread.
Sew the pieces of fabric together. If you are making a patchwork blanket or piecing strips of fabric together, sew the pieces together.
Lay the fabric right side down on a level surface. The right side is the side that will be showing when the blanket is finished.
Place the quilt batting on the top. Then place the backing fabric on top of the quilt batting with the right side facing up. Pin the pieces together in several places, including the corners and in the middle.
Sew several lines across the fabric at 1-inch intervals. The lines do not have to be straight lines; they can be any design or style you choose. These lines are only meant to keep the pieces together and to eliminate any chance of the quilt batting bunching inside the blanket. Remove the pins as you sew and do not sew through them.
Place the binding around the edges of the blanket and sew in place, making sure to sew through all three layers of fabric and both edges of the binding to ensure it is fully attached and covering all the raw fabric edges. Sew almost all the way around the blanket, back stitching at the end for stability.
Stop sewing but do not lift the needle or cut the thread yet.
Trim the excess binding approximately 1 inch away from the needle. Fold under the raw edge of the binding.
Finish sewing the remaining 1 inch of the binding, back stitching at the end to secure in place.
