How to Make a Felt Kindle Sleeve

Kindles and other e-book readers are convenient for compact travel. Yet the screens can be scratched and prone to other damage during travel if the Kindle is not covered and protected. To save money, make a custom Kindle sleeve using beginner sewing skills and common materials. Felt is a good material for a Kindle sleeve since it's soft enough to protect the screen, yet durable enough to hold up with use.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 yard of felt
  • White chalk
  • Fabric scissors
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Sew-on metal snap
  • Hand sewing needle

Instructions

    • 1

Fold a yard of felt in half, bringing the shorter edges together, and lay it on top of a table.

    • 2

Lay the Kindle directly on top of the felt and trace around it, using white chalk and adding 1 inch to each side.

    • 3

Cut along the chalk outline, cutting through both layers of felt, to get two rectangular pieces of felt.

    • 4

Lay the felt pieces directly on top of each other and sew together both longer sides and one of the shorter sides, using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. This will leave an opening in one side for the Kindle to slide in and out.

    • 5

Hand sew one half of the metal clasp to the middle of one of the edges of the opening and sew the other half of the clasp to the middle of the opposite edge of the opening.

    • 6

Turn the sleeve right side out and slip the Kindle inside it, snapping it closed at the top.
