Patches
Express yourself by sewing patches onto your book bag. Patches -- sold by craft stores and online retailers -- come in many different shapes, colors and sizes. These embellishments let you advertise your interests, such as sports, dance, academics, music or video games. Adorn your bag with patches that support your favorite bands, sport teams, artists, movies or politicians. Patches can help you show your pride in your religious beliefs or sexual orientation. Other patches display popular or vintage slogans.
Buttons
Make your book bag stand out in a crowd by sewing on buttons. Buttons are available in a myriad of shapes, sizes, colors and materials, such as plastic, metal, wood and ceramic. Add cameo or pearl buttons for a sophisticated look, choose jewel or glass buttons for glamour, or go with a bolder look by sewing on buttons shaped like animals, flowers, shells or skulls. Display the buttons in a random pattern or a geometric one. You can use the buttons sparingly or liberally. You could even spell out words with the buttons.
Fake Flowers
Sew a fabric flower to your book bag. Add a single flower or cover the entire bag with blossoms. Choose a popular flower such as a rose, tulip or lily. If you prefer wild flowers, use fake daisies or purple coneflowers. Give your book bag a tropical feel by adorning it with hibiscus, orchids or lotus flowers. If you get bored with your flower embellishments, take out the stitches and change the flowers every season.
Graphic T-shirts
If your favorite graphic T-shirt has holes in it, give it a new life by using it as a book bag decoration. Cut out the design from the shirt using fabric shears and sew it onto the flap or front of your book bag. For a cleaner look, hem the edges of the cutout before affixing it to the bag. If you̵7;re going for a more casual look, fray the edges of the cutout and then sew it on the bag. However, make sure the graphic design is appropriate for school.
