How to Make a Pom Garland

Pompoms aren't just for cheerleaders any more. Make baseball-sized versions of the traditional yarn pom pom craft for any decorating where a bit of whimsy is called for, from weddings to nursery decor. Recycle old T-shirt or other fabric scraps into the materials needed for your pompoms and your garland will be visually appealing and ecofriendly at the same time.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut up old T-shirts or fabric scraps into strips that are each approximately 1 inch wide with sharp scissors. Tie the short ends together to make a long ball of fabric strips, winding the ball by hand as you go. One T-shirt will make at least a few pompoms for your garland.

    • 2

Take the end of your fabric scrap ball and wrap it around the four fingers of your non-dominant hand approximately 20 to 30 times. Cut off the end of the strand after the last wrap.

    • 3

Cut a shorter strip off the fabric ball that is approximately 6 inches long. Slide the bundle of fabric loops off your hand and tie this smaller strip around the center, pinching it together so the looped ends are facing the top and bottom and the centers are all bundled together. Tie a tight knot to secure the pompom bundle.

    • 4

Use scissors to cut the loops open on the top and bottom of your bundle. Let the fabric loops separate and puff out around each other, then trim them to make them even and give the pompom a spherical shape.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 1 through 4 to make several more fabric pompoms.

    • 6

Cut a long length of twine, as long as you want your garland to be. Thread one end onto a large-eye, blunt needle.

    • 7

Pass the needle through the center of each pompom, one at a time, to thread them onto the twine. Hang up the garland and slide the pom poms around on the twine to position them where you want them.
