Sewing a Hidden Stitch

Knowing how to sew a hidden stitch will make your finished project look professional rather than sloppy. Hidden stitches are used for closing pillows, finishing lined purses and many more projects. There are several types of hidden stitches, all of which are completed on the inside of the project so that they do not show on the outside. Some hidden stitches are completely hidden and cannot be seen on the inside of the project either. Once it's completed, it will be nearly impossible to tell where the stitches are.

Instructions

    • 1

Thread a hand sewing needle with thread that matches the project being sewn or clear nylon thread for multicolored fabrics. Tie a knot in the end of the thread to keep it from coming loose from the fabric.

    • 2

Iron the edge that you will be placing the stitch on so that the seam allowance is folded towards the inside of the project.

    • 3

Fold back a small portion of the edge to be hemmed on the inside of the project. This is the top, or raw, edge of the hem you ironed in the previous step.

    • 4

Insert the needle, starting on the inside or hem edge of the project. Push the needle through the folded in hem and complete a small stitch, approximately three to five threads of the fabrics weave.

    • 5

Insert the needle into the fabric on the outside of the project approximately 1/4 inch away from the first stitch. Create another small stitch, approximately three threads of the fabric long. The stitch should be horizontal.

    • 6

Make another small stitch on the inside of the folded back raw edge of the hem 1/4 inch away from the last stitch made.

    • 7

Continue creating these small stitches, one in the hem then one in the outer fabric, until the project is completed.

    • 8

Tie a knot in the fabric on the hem side of the project, tight enough to keep the thread from becoming loose but not so tight that it gathers the fabric. Trim the excess thread and tuck in the small portion of thread left after trimming.
