How to Make a Baby Dress From T-Shirts

T-shirts in pretty colors or patterns can be made into baby dresses that are soft for your little one's delicate skin. The project is easy even for those with basic seamstress skills. Look at thrift stores and garage sales for like-new T-shirts that are a size or two too big, or use hand-me downs the baby hasn't grown into yet to keep this project economical and environmentally friendly, as well as adorable.

Instructions

  1. Tiered Dress

    • 1

Measure down 4 inches from the arm holes of a T-shirt that fits your baby. Cut the bottom from the T-shirt at this line. This is the dress bodice.

    • 2

Cut 4 inches from the bottom of a T-shirt that is one size too big for your baby, and 4 inches from the bottom of a T-shirt that is two sizes too big. These are the two tiers.

    • 3

Turn the smaller T-shirt tier inside out and slip it over the bottom of the dress bodice so that the bottom hems line up. Pin around, pleating the tier as necessary to make it fit. Sew around this hem with a zig-zag stitch. Fold the first tier down.

    • 4

Turn the second tier inside out and slip it over the first tier so the bottom hems line up. Pin in place, pleating the second tier as necessary to make it fit. Sew around this hem with a zig-zag stitch. Turn the second tier down. This is the finished dress.

    Simple Resized Dress

    • 5

Thread your sewing machine bobbin with elastic thread and the spool with regular thread. Locate the shoulder seam of a T-shirt that is three sizes too big for your baby. Sew down the sleeves on either side of the shoulder seam. The stitches will gather, causing the fabric to shorten and ruffle.

    • 6

Measure 4 inches from the shoulder seam down the front of the dress and mark this spot. Sew around the T-shirt at this level. Make three rows of stitches around the circumference of the T-shirt. This will gather the waist and turn the bottom of the T-shirt into a fuller skirt.

    • 7

Place the dress on your baby. If the skirt is too long, mark a hem. Turn the dress inside out and pin the hem up. Sew around the hem with a zig-zag stitch and trim excess fabric.
