How to Hem a Basketball Jersey

Hem you child's basketball jersey, whether a treasured replica from her favorite professional team or her own uniform, to enable complete freedom of movement as she plays. Even if the basketball jersey is several inches too long, hemming provides an easy fix for excess fabric and, if you leave some extra fabric, allows for adjustment as your child grows. You can also shorten a a jersey to convert it into a casual short top. Double-stitch hem and finish the cut edge to create a professional-looking hem.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the jersey off evenly 3/4 inch below the desired hemline.

    • 2

Sew a wide zigzag stitch with a standard stitch length on your sewing machine. Sew around the cut edge of the shirt to finish it neatly; ensure that the needle goes slightly off the edge on the right side of the stitch.

    • 3

Iron a 3/4-inch hem around the bottom of the jersey. The hem should be on the inside of the shirt.

    • 4

Set the machine to sew a straight stitch with a standard stitch length. Sew around the bottom of the shirt, 3/8-inch from the folded edge to secure the hem. Sew a second seam 5/8-inch from the folded edge.
