Sewing a Liner in a Bag

The lining in a bag protects the outer fabric of the bag from being stained when an object spills over inside. Linings also prevent items from falling out of your bag when a hole forms in the outer layer. If you have a single layer bag without a lining, you can create your own custom lining to compliment the outer fabric and cover the unattractive underside of the outer fabric. This professional touch will enhance the overall appearance of your bag.

Tape measure
Pencil
Poster board
Scissors
Pins
Lining fabric
Sewing machine

Instructions

  Measure the length of the bag. Add one inch to this measurement.

  Measure the width of the bag. Add 1/2 inch to this measurement. Trace your pattern shape onto poster board using these length and width measurements (with the extra space added on.) Cut the traced pattern out.

  Pin the pattern to your lining fabric. Cut out the lining fabric around the pattern shape. Repeat.

  Lay the right sides of the lining fabric against each other and machine stitch the fabric 1/4 inch in from the edge to join the sides and bottom of the lining material, leaving the top open.

  Insert your lining into your bag. Fold 1/2 inch of the top of the fabric lining fabric out and under so it is positioned against the underside of the outer fabric for the bag. Fold the top edge over another 1/2 inch and pin the top edge of the lining material to the underside of the top edge of the bag.

  Machine stitch around the top opening of the bag 5/8 inch down from the top edge of the pinned fabrics. Remove the pins.

Sewing
