Sewing a Rectangle Cushion

Add variety to an arrangement of throw pillows by adding a rectangular pillow among the usual square ones. Use the golden mean to craft a pillow with pleasing proportions. A 10-by-15-inch pillow has the correct proportions to please the eye. A rectangular pillow is a good canvas for trims such as ribbons or buttons. They look especially nice going in a band around the middle of the pillow between the long sides.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two 11-by-16-inch rectangles of fabric.

    • 2

Pin the rectangles together with the right sides of the fabric on the inside and all the edges even.

    • 3

Sew a straight seam 1/2 inch from all sides, starting a few inches from one corner. When you reach the corner, stop with the needle down in the fabric. Raise the pressure foot, turn the fabric 90 degrees to turn the corner, lower the pressure foot and continue sewing. Leave a 4-inch opening in one side for turning.

    • 4

Clip the corners by cutting off the seam allowance, at a 45-degree angle, cutting close to the seam without cutting through it. The seam allowance is the fabric that extends beyond the seam.

    • 5

Turn the pillow right-side out and press it flat with an iron. Turn in the seam allowance at the opening, and iron the fold.

    • 6

Stuff the pillow firmly with fiberfill. Sew the folded edges of the opening closed by stitching a straight stitch, 1/8 inch from the folds.
