How to Add Fabric to a Onesie to Make a Gown

If you have moderate sewing skills, put them to good use and turn a onesie into a fashionable dress for a little one. Whether you want to ramp up your own child's wardrobe or you need a quick baby shower gift, a onesie dress is both comfortable and stylish at the same time. Customize your onesie dress with your favorite fabrics; they're so quick to make, you could sew one for every day of the week.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width across the onesie at its middle point; call this measurement "A."

    • 2

Cut two pieces of fabric that measure 1 1/2 times measurement A wide by 12 inches tall. Position them together with right sides facing in and sew a straight seam along each 12-inch side, positioning the seam 1/4 inch in from the edge. Go back over each seam with a zigzag stitch to strengthen it.

    • 3

Fold the fabric tube you created in Step 2 so that the top and bottom edges meet; now the tube of fabric will encase the seams within the fold. Iron in place at the fold to secure it.

    • 4

Position the raw edges of the fabric skirt in your sewing machine and sew a long, straight stitch all around the perimeter of this edge. Position your stitches 1/4 inch down from the top edge and go through both layers of fabric as you stitch.

    • 5

Pull on the ends of the threads you sewed in Step 4 to gather the top of the skirt. Use your hands to even out the gathers until the skirt is as wide around as the onesie itself.

    • 6

Turn the onesie upside-down so the snaps face up and the sleeves face down. Pull the skirt up around the onesie so that the gathered edge faces in the same direction as the snaps and it is positioned at the approximate middle of the onesie.

    • 7

Undo the snaps and fold the bottom half of the onesie open so that it sandwiches the gathered fabric between the onesie fabric layers. Pin this sandwiched fabric together around the perimeter.

    • 8

Put the onesie into your sewing machine and sew a straight stitch 1/2 inch down from the fold in the onesie all the way around. Backstitch at the beginning and end of your seam to secure it.

    • 9

Remove the pins, open up the onesie and re-do the snaps at the bottom so the skirt now ruffles out from the center of the onesie to make a dress.
