How to Change a Belt Loop to a Clip

Attaching items like water bottles, flashlights or even a compass to your clothing can help keep the item handy while eliminating the need to carry it in your hands. With a few simple sewing techniques you can remove a belt loop from a pair of pants or shorts and replace it with a clip. For this project you can use a clip purchased from your local craft of sewing store.

Things You'll Need

  • Seam ripper
  • Thread that matches the fabric of your garment
  • Sewing needle
  • Scissors
  • Metal clip

Instructions

    • 1

Rip the seams connecting the belt loop to the pants. To do this, insert the pointy end of the seam ripper between the garment and the belt loop. Pull the seam ripper down until it cuts through the stitches and releases the loop from the garment. Discard the belt loop.

    • 2

Thread the needle by cutting 1-foot of thread and pulling it through the hole in the end of the needle. Tie a knot in the end of the thread.

    • 3

Push the needle through the area where the belt loop was. Make sure the needle goes through the side of the fabric that lies against the skin. Pull the needle and thread until the thread is taut. This is the first stitch.

    • 4

Push the needle back through the fabric 1-centimeter away from where it came through the fabric. This is the second stitch.

    • 5

Thread the needle through the loop of the clip.

    • 6

Thrust the needle though the fabric in the same spot you pushed it through the first time. Push the needle through the area where you made the second stitch.

    • 7

Thread the needle through the loop of the clip again and repeat the first and second stitch. Keep repeating this step until you have made 12 loops of thread around the clip.

    • 8

Perform the first stitch and instead of pulling the thread until taut, leave it loose. This will make a loop of thread. Put your needle through the loop and pull. This will create a knot.

    • 9

Cut the thread dangling from the knot.
