How to Learn to Applique

Appliques are often associated with quilting, but appliques can be used to embellish anything you make out of fabric, including pillows, shirts, jackets and hats. There are several methods of applique, such as raw edge, folded edge, starch and fusible web. The fusible web method temporarily binds the applique to the main sewing fabric so that it doesn̵7;t move while you are stitching it in place. This makes the applique process easy for both beginning and experienced sewers.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash and dry the applique fabric and the main fabric. Iron the fabric smooth.

    • 2

Pick up the fusible web. Fusible web comes with a paper liner on both sides of the web. The paper liner will pull off one side more easily than the other. Gently tug on the paper liner on both sides of the web to determine which side pulls off more easily. Do not remove either paper liner. Put the fusible web on a flat work surface with the paper side that pulls off easily face down.

    • 3

Pick up the pencil and draw or trace the image of the desired applique onto the paper liner of the fusible web. The image, including any letters, must be drawn in reverse of how you would like the finished applique to look.

    • 4

Pick up the fusible web and peel off the easily removed bottom paper liner. Leave the paper liner with the drawn image in place.

    • 5

Place the fusible web sticky side down onto the wrong side of the applique fabric.

    • 6

Cut the applique fabric and the fusible web using the pencil drawn image as a guide.

    • 7

Peel the remaining paper liner off of the applique fabric.

    • 8

Place the applique fabric sticky side down onto the right side of the main fabric.

    • 9

Set the iron to a heat setting appropriate for the fabric type, and press the applique onto the main fabric.

    • 10

Place main fabric and applique onto the sewing machine and select a straight, zigzag or blanket stitch.

    • 11

Stitch around the entire perimeter of the applique fabric. Backstitch the final stitch and cut the excess thread. Remove from the sewing machine.
