How to Make a New Seam on a Shirt

If you have basic sewing skills and baggy shirts in your wardrobe, improve the fit of your oversized shirts by creating new seam lines. Alter seam lines to enhance the curves of fitted shirts, or adjust the angles of the seam lines to convert masculine cut shirts to feminine styles. Give your favorite frumpy shirts a fresh new look.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the shirt inside out and put it on.

    • 2

Grab the amount of fabric along the existing seam that you want to take in or reduce from the shirt with the new seam line.

    • 3

Insert pushpins through the fabric parallel to the existing seam line at the edge of the fabric you are holding to mark the placement of the new seam. Move the pins 5/8 inch toward the fabric you are holding to leave adequate room for the seam allowance .

    • 4

Take the shirt off carefully and machine-stitch along the pinned line to make the new seam.

    • 5

Remove the pushpins from the shirt and cut off any excess fabric. Turn the shirt right-side-out.
