How to Make Hanging Quilts

Quilting is a time-consuming hobby. Once you've created your masterpiece, you'll want to show it off. If you're displaying your work at a quilt show, you need to hang it properly. You could always clip a quilt to a clothesline, but a cleaner, more polished display attaches a quilt sleeve to the back of the quilt and inserts a pole into the sleeve. This method shows off your handiwork without any hanging instruments distracting from the quilt itself.

Instructions

  1. Constructing the Quilt

    • 1

Sketch the layout of how your finished quilt will look using graph paper, pencil and colored markers. Trace your shapes onto the corresponding fabric.

    • 2

Cut out the pieces of your quilt and sew them together.

    • 3

Measure and cut out your batting and bottom layer fabric.

    • 4

Place the batting layer in between the top and bottom layers and sew the quilt together

    Constructing the Quilt Pole Sleeve

    • 5

Measure a rectangle on a piece of fabric that's 10 inches by the width of your quilt.

    • 6

Fold the piece of fabric in half and fold the edges down twice. Sew a line of stitching along the bottom of the folded piece.

    • 7

Keep the right sides out and fold the piece of fabric in half. Press the folded piece. Fold each edge of the folded piece in toward the center and press into place. Use steam so two prominent creases are formed.

    • 8

Line up the two edges and stitch together with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. The pole sleeve should form a triangular shape. Iron the seam allowance open without creating a new crease.

    • 9

Line the pole sleeve up against the backside of the quilt. Leave an equal amount of space on each side, and the center point of the triangular shape should be pointing away from the quilt. Using the creases formed in Section 2, Step 3 as a guide, stitch the pole sleeve to the quilt by hand.
