Instructions

  1. Garter with Pleated Rosette

    • 1

Cut a 10-inch-length of 1 1/2-inch-wide satin ribbon. Accordion pleat the ribbon by folding the end of the ribbon 1/2 inch one way and them 1/2 inch the other way until the whole ribbon is pleated. Unfold the top fold and fold it the other direction, so that the cut end of the ribbon is tucked into the folded stack.

    • 2

Thread a needle and stick it through the end of the pleated stack of ribbon 1/8 inch from the short end of the stack.

    • 3

Fan the other end of the stack around in a circle until the top end is over the bottom end. Adjust the pleats evenly.

    • 4

Make several stitches in the center of the ribbon to hold the rosette in place.

    • 5

Measure the arm or leg of the wearer and cut one piece of 3/4-inch elastic this length and two pieces of 1 1/2-inch ribbon twice as long.

    • 6

Lay one piece of ribbon on a flat surface with the shiny side down and lay the other piece on top of it with the shiny side up.

    • 7

Sew the ribbons together along both long edges. Sew as close to the edge as possible.

    • 8

Use a safety pin to thread the elastic through the ribbon casing. Sew the ends of the elastic together to make a ring. Be sure the elastic is not twisted.

    • 9

Pull the ends of the casing up to the seam in the elastic so that they completely cover the elastic. Hand sew the rosette over the ends to hold them together. If desired, sew a shank button in the center of the rosette.

    Garter with Soft Rosette

    • 10

Cut an 8-inch-long piece of 1-inch-wide ribbon.

    • 11

Coil the ribbon to make a rose shape. Coil tightly to make the center of the rose and loosen the coil as you reach the outside.

    • 12

Fold in the final end at a 45-degree angle. Sew the bottom of the coil together as tightly as possible. This will cause the top of the rosette to open up.

    • 13

Make a garter as described earlier using the soft rosette instead of the pleated rosette.
