Things You'll Need
Instructions
Run the sweater through the hot water cycle and high heat setting on your washing machine and dryer. Do this at least twice to help the fibers in the sweater fuse together well so that it will not unravel as you make your hat.
Measure the circumference of your head; call this measurement A. Measure the height from the center of your ear to the top center of your head; add a half inch and call this measurement B.
Turn the sweater inside out and lay it flat on a table in front of you. Cut two pieces of fabric from the bottom of the sweater (keeping the bottom hem intact) that measure one-half A wide by B tall. Cut through the front and back layers of the sweater at once to make your two pieces.
Cut off the top corners of the rectangles of sweater fabric to round off the top and make it hat-shaped.
Use your sewing machine to sew a straight stitch around the sides and top of the hat, keeping the pieces inside out (right sides facing in and facing one another). Go back over your seam with a zigzag stitch, overlapping the edges of the fabric in the stitch to stabilize the seams.
Turn the hat right side out and pull it on to wear it.
