How to Make a Dinosaur Sweatshirt With Spikes

If your little one spends lots of time roaring like a dinosaur, help him dress the part in an adorable hooded sweatshirt with spikes. Make tiny spikes that barely stick up above the fabric or larger spikes that curve back like waves. Choose a color for the spikes that matches the sweatshirt for a subtle look or a contrasting color for spikes that will stand out. You can even use a floral pattern for a very feminine dinosaur.

  • Measuring tape
  • Large paper

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a line with a fabric marker from the top of the head on the sweatshirt, down the center of the back to the top of the rib-knit trim around the bottom. Measure this line.

    • 2

Make a pattern for the spikes on a large sheet of paper by drawing a pencil line equal to the length you measured. Draw a line of dinosaur spikes on top of the line. Make the spikes no more than 2 inches tall.

    • 3

Add seam allowances by making a second line 1/2 inch away from the sides and tops of the spikes and another straight line 1/2 inch below the straight line under the spikes. Cut along the outside lines to make the pattern.

    • 4

Use the pattern to cut two pieces of fabric and a piece of heavy-weight interfacing. Sweatshirt knit is the best choice for the fabric, but you could also use a medium-weight woven cotton.

    • 5

Lay one piece of fabric right side up on a flat surface. Lay the other piece on top of it, right side down. Lay the interfacing on top. Pin the stack of fabric together.

    • 6

Sew along the sides and top of the spikes, stitching 1/2 inch from the edge. Trim the seam allowances to 1/4 inch.

    • 7

Clip the corners and turn the line of spikes right side out. Press the spikes.

    • 8

Sew a zigzag stitch along the straight bottom edge of the spikes.

    • 9

Pin the row of spikes to the sweatshirt, so that the straight edge is along the line you drew down the back.

    • 10

Turn the sweatshirt wrong side out and fold it along the line, so that the straight edge of the spikes is encased in the fold.

    • 11

Pin the fold in place. Remove the pins you used on the outside of the shirt. You will have to reach inside the shirt to get them.

    • 12

Begin sewing 1 inch from the end of the fold and sew with a straight stitch until you are 1 inch away from the other end. At that point sew closer and closer to the fold, as if you were making a dart.

    • 13

Finish the seam as close to the fold as you can, just beyond the end of the row of spikes. Do the same on the other end of the seam.
