How to Tighten the Shoulders on Men's Suits

When you wear a suit to create a good impression, unsightly bulges at the shoulders lead to embarrassment. Men with sloping shoulders often require shoulder-seam alterations on suit jackets to get the best fit. If you have intermediate sewing skills, don't pay a tailor to get your suit fitted properly. Save your money and eliminate these unattractive flaws at home. Custom fit your suit with a few alterations and wear your suit with confidence.

Things You'll Need

  • Tailor's chalk
  • Seam ripper
  • Hand-sewing needle
  • Thread that matches the color of the outer fabric
  • Invisible thread

Instructions

    • 1

Try on the suit jacket. Grab the excess fabric on the outer fabric around the shoulder seam. Draw a line in chalk to mark the new seam around the base of the excess fabric.

    • 2

Separate the shoulder seam under the lining with the seam rippers. Leave enough space to remove the shoulder pad.

    • 3

Knot the ends of the thread to keep the remaining stitches on the shoulder seam intact. Pull out any shoulder pads between the lining and outer fabric.

    • 4

Seam rip the outer fabric shoulder seam carefully. Fold the fabric in so the fold line is along the line you drew in chalk earlier. Stitch the seam back together along this line on the underside of the fabric with the thread that matches the outer fabric.

    • 5

Draw a line where you would like the new seam on the lining fabric in tailor's chalk. Replace the shoulder pads and fold the fabric in on the wrong side of the lining along your drawn seam line on the lining material.

    • 6

Whip-stitch the lining material together along the drawn seam line with invisible thread by threading your knot through the wrong side of the lining fabric and making a series of short stitches. Hide the end knot inside the seam.

    • 7

Repeat the previous steps to tighten the shoulder seam on the remaining side of the suit jacket.
