How to Make a Pareo Wrap

A pareo wrap is a large piece of fabric that you can transform into a variety of garments, all based on the method you use for tying it onto your body. A pareo is a versatile accessory, perfect for a beach cover-up, a shawl or wrap, or even a dress or top. Change the type of fabric that you use for your pareo and you can instantly transform it to a garment for a different season: lightweight cotton or gauze for summer and fleece or knit for winter.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a length of knit fabric that is approximately 55 to 60 inches wide by 70 inches long.

    • 2

Fold the fabric lengthwise, lining up the folded edge on top as you lay it on a table or other working surface.

    • 3

Measure halfway across the top of the pareo. Cut down 1 inch from the fold at this point, then cut sideways all the way to one short end. This will remove a thin rectangle from the fabric.

    • 4

Open the pareo. If desired, you may sew a zigzag stitch around the perimeter of the fabric or use a serger's overlock stitch function. This is not necessary as the knit fabric will not fray, but it adds an extra touch to the finished garment.
