How to Make a Cincher From a T-Shirt

A waist cincher is traditionally part of a Renaissance style costume, resembling a corset but slightly less tall. A waist cincher can be part of your outfit any day of the week when you feel like adding a little bit of drama to your wardrobe. Make a cincher out of a T-shirt and it will be both fashionable and thrifty at the same time. However, you will need basic sewing skills in order to make a T-shirt cincher.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • T-shirt
  • Pen
  • Scissors
  • Straight pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Grommet punch tool (optional)
  • Grommets (optional)
  • Ribbon or laces

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height from just under your bust to just below your belly button; add 1 inch and call this measurement A. Measure the circumference of your torso around your rib cage; call this measurement B.

    • 2

Cut two large rectangles out of your T-shirt fabric; each rectangle should measure A by B inches. You may need more than one T-shirt to do this, depending on the size.

    • 3

Place the two pieces of fabric together with the right sides facing one another. Fold them in half lengthwise with the folded edge facing down.

    • 4

Start at the top left corner and move in by 4 inches; use a pen to draw a long, shallow "U" shape from this point to its counterpart 4 inches in from the top right corner. Cut along this line with scissors, going through all layers of the T-shirt fabric.

    • 5

Open up the fabric and lay it flat so it somewhat resembles an hourglass shape. Pin the fabric together in this position using straight pins around the edges.

    • 6

Use your sewing machine to sew a straight seam 1/2 inch in from the edge. Leave a 4-inch hole open in the seam for turning (in other words, do not sew along 4 inches of one edge).

    • 7

Turn the piece right side out. Fold in the edges of the fabric along the opening from step 6 and pin the opening closed. Sew a straight seam all along the outside edges of the fabric to secure it further.

    • 8

Hold the piece so that one short edge is closest to your body. Use a grommet tool to punch grommets along this edge, every 2 inches across. If you do not have a grommet tool, simply use scissors to punch or cut small holes instead. The holes should be approximately 1 inch in from the edge nearest you and spaced 2 inches apart across this side.

    • 9

Repeat step 8 on the other short end of the piece.

    • 10

Wrap the piece around your waist with the holes in front. Use a length of ribbon or lace to tie through the holes, as if tying a shoe. Pull tightly to fasten.
