How to Make Simple Slouchy Hats

A slouchy hat is an overly tall hat that will fall and slouch down the back of the head. The stylish head coverings are perfect for long hair, which can be pulled into the roomy hat. You can make the slouchy hat from warm and cozy fleece fabric, which is sold by the yard in a variety of colors at fabric supply stores. The fleece will not fray, eliminating time-consuming edging, and will stretch to fit the head securely.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • 1/2-yard fleece fabric
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the widest part of the head and add 1/2 inch. Cut a piece of fabric to the width and 14 inches long.

    • 2

Fold the fabric in half widthwise to create a tube, right sides of the fabrics facing each other. Sew a straight seam 1/4 inch from the fabric edges. Knot and cut the yarn.

    • 3

Sew 1/2 inch long basting stitches along one short edge of the tube. Pull the thread to gather the stitching tightly. Hand stitch the gathered opening closed. Knot and cut the yarn.

    • 4

Turn the opposite edge under 1/2 inch and hand stitch a hem.

    • 5

Turn the completed slouchy hat to the right side.
