How to Make a Pocket for a Cardigan

A cardigan is a knit sweater, usually lightweight, that buttons down the front. Cardigans come in a variety of different fabrics and styles, from boxy cropped styles to mid-thigh, body-hugging, slinky styles. Cardigans can be plain or meant to match a variety of different outfits, from jeans to dresses. Dress up your plain cardigan with one or more pockets in knit or woven fabric. For added interest, choose a contrasted print fabric for your pockets.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the fabric on a table or other flat surface.

    • 2

Draw a 5-inch by 4-inch square with a ruler and chalk to make the lines straight.

    • 3

Draw a curved obtuse line on the bottom left side of the square, from 1 inch above the point to 1 inch to the right of the point of the square. Make a mirrored curved line on the bottom right of the square.

    • 4

Cut out the pocket on the inside of the chalk line, following the curved lines on the bottom of the pocket.

    • 5

Fold back the top straight edge of the pocket 1 inch.

    • 6

Sew the hem of the pocket down 3/4 inch from the folded edge.

    • 7

Fold the sides and rounded bottom of the pocket back 1/2 inch.

    • 8

Crease the fold with your fingers to hold it in place.

    • 9

Place the pocket on the cardigan where you would like it to be. The best places are on the chest, at the hip or just below the waistline.

    • 10

Sew the pocket to the cardigan, attaching the sides and the rounded bottom of the pocket to the cardigan 1/4 inch from the folded edge of the pocket.

    • 11

      Iron the pocket, if desired.
