How to Make an Old Pair of Jeans Into a Skirt With Tulle

Scour the closets and dresser drawers to find all the old denim cast-offs the girls are not wearing anymore. Transform those old jeans with holes in the knees and frayed cuffs into a stylish skirt, complete with a tulle ruffle around the edges. Make an old pair of jeans into a skirt with tulle. The contrast of denim and tulle works to create a chic skirt they'll reach for often.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the jeans onto a flat surface with the front of the jeans facing up. Measure down from the top edge of the waistband to just under the fly of the jeans and make a mark at this point with the fabric marker. This point should correspond with the bottom of the pockets in the back of the jeans. Measure the same distance around the entire front and back of the jeans, making marks with the fabric marker.

    • 2

Join the marks into a line around the jeans with the fabric marker. Cut the jeans off with the scissors along the line. Discard the legs of the jeans or use them for another purpose.

    • 3

Measure around the cut edge of the bottom of the jeans with the tape measure. Double this measurement and add 1 inch.

    • 4

Cut a piece of tulle the same length as the doubled measurement and 8 inches wide.

    • 5

Fold the tulle in half widthwise, bringing both long edges together. Place the two short edges together and sew along this edge using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Stitch along the long edges of the tulle using a long basting stitch to gather the fabric. Pull the top basting stitch to gather the tulle until you make the tulle long enough to go around the bottom of the jeans.

    • 6

Determine the finished length you desire for the skirt. Subtract the first measurement of the jeans from the top edge to the crotch from this measurement and add 1 inch. Cut a rectangle of cotton fabric with the same length as the tulle piece and a width that equals the subtracted skirt length you just figured.

    • 7

Fold under 1/4 inch along one long edge of the cotton fabric and press this fold. Fold under another 1/4 inch along the same edge and press the fold again. Stitch 1/8 inch away from the folded edge to hem this edge of the cotton fabric.

    • 8

Place the two short edges of the fabric together with right sides facing and sew along this edge using a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

    • 9

Stitch along the raw edge of the cotton fabric to gather it the same way you gathered the tulle. Pull the top basting stitch to gather the cotton until it has the same length as the tulle.

    • 10

Place the gathered tulle on top of the right side of the cotton fabric, matching the gathered edges of both the tulle and the cotton. Pin the two layers together and stitch along the gathered edges 1/2 inch away from the raw edges. Remove the pins.

    • 11

Place the tulle and cotton fabric onto the jeans with the tulle layer facing the right side of the jeans. Align the raw edges of the jeans, tulle and cotton fabric and pin the layers together.

    • 12

Stitch the three layers together using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Remove the pins. You should have a skirt with jeans on the top half, a tulle ruffle and a gathered cotton bottom half.
