How to Make a Maxi Skirt

A maxi skirt is a long skirt, usually extending from the waist to the floor, typically made of knit fabric. The current maxi trend is a tight, body-hugging style. Cotton spandex jersey and polyester spandex blend work best, as they will stretch to fit many body types. Use solid or printed fabric, in any conceivable color. An elastic waistband makes this skirt highly adjustable. For an added twist, choose an elastic that contrasts the fabric. Use a serger for the bulk of the sewing for best results.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 yards 60-inch wide fabric
  • 1 yard elastic (1/2- to 1-inch width)
  • Serger
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Tape measure

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the fabric in half, widthwise and lay it on a table or other flat surface,

    • 2

Measure your waist. Subtract 1 inch from the measurement, and divide the measurement in half. Cut the fabric vertically and parallel to the fold away from the fold.

    • 3

Unfold the fabric and lay it flat on a table or other flat surface, face side or right side of the fabric facing up. Place the elastic, right-side up, on the top edge of the fabric along the width of the fabric. Overlap the elastic and fabric by 1/2 inch.

    • 4

Sew the elastic to the fabric in the center of the overlap, stretching the fabric and elastic together as you sew. You will have to stretch the elastic more than the fabric to get it to stretch to the edge of the fabric.

    • 5

Sew the two side seams of the skirt together, 1/2 inch from the fabric edge using a serger. Sew the edge of the hem using the serger.
