Instructions

    • 1

Measure your child's waist with a measuring tape.

    • 2

Visit your local fabric retailer and purchase a children's elastic waist skirt pattern, two pieces of flat elastic in the length of your child's waist and the fabric you wish to use for your skirt. A long skirt pattern is preferable as you will lose some length in the skirt with the bubble hem.

    • 3

Lie the fabric on a flat surface in front of you. Place the skirt pattern on top of the fabric and pin in place with sewing pins.

    • 4

Cut around the pattern with your sewing scissors. Remove the pattern from the fabric and place it to one side.

    • 5

Place one piece of the skirt on top of the other. The fabric that constitutes the outside of the skirt should be facing inward.

    • 6

Pin the side seams of the skirt together with sewing pins. Leave a 1/2-inch margin between the edge of the fabric and the pins on each side.

    • 7

Fold over the fabric allocated for the elastic waistband casing and pin down with sewing pins.

    • 8

Measure the width of your flat elastic. Measure the same distance from the bottom of your skirt and mark with fabric chalk. Fold over the fabric on this mark for the bottom elastic casing and pin down with sewing pins.

    • 9

Sew the side seams of the skirt with your sewing machine.

    • 10

Sew around the waist and hem of your skirt to create the two elastic casings. Leave a vertical gap on one side of the skirt at the top and the bottom so you can insert the elastic.

    • 11

Attach a safety pin to the end of each piece of elastic. Thread one piece of elastic through the gap in the side of the casing at the top of the skirt and join one end of elastic to the other with the safety pin. Repeat this process for the bottom of the skirt.

    • 12

Sew across the width of the elastic where it overlaps on the top and bottom of the skirt with your sewing machine. Sew the elastic casing shut on the top and bottom of the skirt with your sewing machine.

    • 13

Turn the skirt inside out and put it on your child. Place the piece of elastic at the bottom of the skirt on your child's upper thighs, allowing the rest of the material to drop down over the top and create the bubble effect.
