How to Make a Tuxedo Collar

A wing collar is a classic look with a tuxedo. The tall collar is flattering on any man, and the small triangular wings echo the spread of a bow tie. This collar works with both wide and narrow bow ties; it also looks sharp with a necktie. You can transform the turned-down collar on an ordinary dress shirt into a tuxedo collar.

Instructions

    • 1

Unbutton the shirt and turn up the collar.

    • 2

Lay the collar on the ironing board so that the inside of the shirt is face down. Fold back 1 1/2 inch of the point on each end of the collar so that it makes a 45-degree angle with the top of the collar. Iron the folds.

    • 3

Sew the folds in place by stitching 1/4 inch from the fold. The "wings" will stick out to each side when the shirt is worn.
