Things You'll Need
Instructions
Fold a bath towel in half so that the two short edges line up. Use scissors to cut a half-circle shape out of the center of the fold to make a hole for your child's head. Discard the circle of fabric you have removed.
Measure the bottom edge of the towel and divide that number by 4; this is measurement A. Measure the height of the towel as it is folded and divide that number by 3; this is measurement B.
Measure in from the bottom right corner of the towel toward the center by A inches; cut a vertical slit in the bottom hem of the towel at this point, cutting through both folded layers of the towel. Repeat this step coming in from the bottom left corner.
Measure down from the folded top of the towel on the right side by B inches; cut a horizontal slit in the right side of the towel at this point, going through both layers of the folded towel. Repeat this on the left side.
Cut a rectangular shape out of the bottom right and bottom left corners of the towel. The rectangle you remove should measure A wide-by-(2 times)B tall. Use the slits you cut as your starting points for the top and bottom cuts of the rectangles. Hold the extra fabric off to the side after you remove it.
Use straight pins to pin together the edges of the towel where you just cut out the rectangle. Sew a straight seam along these edges, making your seam 1/4 inch in from the cut edges. Go back over the seam again with a serger or a zigzag stitch on a sewing machine to secure them.
Cut a straight slit up the center front of the towel, going from the bottom hem (centered) to the neckline. This will create an open front to your robe. Turn the robe right side out.
Fold under the seams in the front of the robe (along the line you just cut) by 1/4 inch, then by 1/4 inch again. Pin in place with straight pins and sew a straight seam along the fold to secure it. Repeat this around the neckline and the sleeves.
Cut a strip of fabric out of your leftover towel pieces that is 4 inches wide by twice the length of your child's waist. You may have to piece a few scraps together to get a strip this large.
Fold the towel strip in half lengthwise and sew along the long edge. Turn the strip right side out and top stitch a straight seam along both long sides, then pinch together the short ends and serge or zigzag stitch over them. This is the tie for your child's robe.
Put the robe on your child, overlapping the front edges slightly and then secure it with the tie around the waist.
