How to Make Heart Shaped Fabric Yo-Yos

Most fabric yo-yos are round, but by cutting the fabric into a specific shape before adding the edge stitching and gathers, it is possible to make yo-yos in different shapes. These alternative shapes for yo-yos add more interest to decorative finishes on garments or furnishings. Heart-shaped yo-yos are particularly appealing when made from light, summery, cotton fabrics. Use them to embellish little girls' dresses, or to brighten up a summer decor.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a heart shape on plain white paper. Make the heart twice the size you want your finished heart-shaped yo-yo. Cut the heart shape out.

    • 2

Pin the template to your fabric, then cut the fabric around the outside of your template.

    • 3

Thread your needle with two strands of sewing thread and knot the ends. Stitch around one side of the heart, starting from the central point at the top and finishing at the point of the heart at the bottom. Pull the thread from the needle, but don't cut it.

    • 4

Re-thread the needle and stitch the opposite side of the heart in the same way, again, starting from the center at the top and working around to the point of the heart at the bottom. Take the thread out of the needle without cutting it.

    • 5

Pull the threads at the bottom of the heart until the fabric gathers and folds into the center. Help the fabric to fall into the heart shape by molding it with your fingers.

    • 6

Tie the threads in a knot to secure them, then cut off two of the threads. Thread the remaining two threads through your needle and take the needle through the fabric at the top of the heart, making a tiny stitch close to the edge. Pull the thread tight to make the V notch in the top of the heart, then secure the threads by working a couple of small stitches in the same place in the middle of the yo-yo.
