How to Use Jacquard Textiles

Jacquard is not a specific fabric, but rather a weaving method that weaves a pattern or design into the fabric. The method was invented in the early 1800s by Joseph Marie Jacquard. Many patterned fabrics, such as brocade, damask, tapestry and matelasse, are jacquards. Knitted materials with designs knitted into them are also considered to be jacquards. Jacquard fabrics are used in a variety of ways for clothing and for interior decor.

Instructions

    • 1

Use jacquard in the home for curtains and bedspreads or to cover upholstered furniture. Napkins and tablecloths are often made from damask, a light, linen-like jacquard.

    • 2

Use jacquard for dressy women's clothing. Light jacquard fabrics make elegant dresses, while heavier jacquards can be used for jackets, vests or dramatic long skirts.

    • 3

Use jacquard with a small pattern for men's neckties.

    • 4

Use heavier, shiny jacquards in costume design. These rich, tapestry-like fabrics create an image of status and wealth for historical figures in plays.
