How to Sew a Suit Coat

Sewing a suit jacket can be challenging and requires a knowledge of basic sewing skills. Suit jackets usually are paired with a skirt or pants and come in a wide range of styles. The basic elements of a suit jacket are the fabric, style or cut, and the degree of customization. The primary element is the cut. It can be loose fitting or tailored. A tailored jacket will have greater detail and should flatter the body type and proportions of the wearer. Choose a pattern style and appropriate level of construction and closely follow the directions included with the pattern.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure for pattern size. Use a soft tape and measure bust or chest, waist and hip. Measure close to the body, without slack. Locate measuring diagrams in the pattern catalog and determine the correct size pattern.

    • 2

Match pattern style and construction to skill level. Most pattern catalogs will have sections designated as easy or for beginners. Find details on the construction of the garment in the pattern details. Locate the pattern recommendations for fabric and trim on the back of the pattern. Choose a fabric that has the correct weight for the jacket style. Avoid limp or loosely woven fabrics. Match your thread color to the fabric.

    • 3

Choose a pattern. Assemble the jacket according to the pattern directions. Pin the seams for a trial fit. Try on the jacket. Adjust the seam width if necessary for a custom fit. Press seams flat as you sew.

    • 4

Finish hem, buttonholes and sew on buttons. Trim any stray threads. Do a final press.
