How to Make a Yarn Mane

Make a yarn mane for a stick horse, a rocking horse or a horse costume. A stuffed sock on a broomstick makes a friendly stick horse. All it needs are button eyes, a ribbon bridle and a yarn mane to become your child's trusted mount. You can also glue a yarn mane on a rocking horse to give it a new look. For a horse costume, attach a yarn mane to a snood, a tube of fabric that covers the hair.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the "horse" to determine the total length of the mane.

    • 2

Draw a line this length down the middle of a sheet of wrapping paper or notebook paper.

    • 3

Cut pieces of yarn twice the length you want the hairs of the finished mane to be.

    • 4

Line the strands of yarn up along the pencil line, with the center of the strand on the line and the yarn perpendicular to the line. Place the pieces of yarn close together so that no paper shows.

    • 5

Sew two seams along the line on the paper 1/8 inch apart. Use a small stitch length.

    • 6

Trim the paper under the mane. Sew or glue the mane in place along the lines of stitching.
