Things You'll Need
Instructions
Wash and dry the fabric to prevent shrinking during future laundering.
Iron the fabric flat and set it aside to cool.
Set the compass to draw a 6-1/2-inch diameter circle and use it to draw a circle on the cardboard. Cut the 6-1/2-inch circle out of the cardboard with scissors.
Pick up the fabric square and lay it on a flat surface with the wrong side facing up.
Lay the 6-1/2-inch cardboard circle on top the fabric square. Trace the cardboard circle onto the fabric, using the fabric-marking pen. Remove the cardboard circle and use the scissors to cut out the 6-1/2-inch fabric circle.
Cut a 4-foot long piece of thread. Pull one end of the thread through the eye of the needle until there are equal lengths of thread on both sides of the needle. Knot the loose ends of the thread together. Place the threaded needle within reach.
Fold a 1-inch segment of the rim of the 6-1/2-inch fabric circle over 1/4-inch toward the wrong side of the fabric. Use the thumb and pointer finger of your nondominant hand to hold the folded segment down.
Pick up the threaded needle with your dominant hand, and push the tip of the needle through the folded segment of fabric from the right side of the fabric to the wrong side of the fabric until the knot rests against the right side of the fabric.
Move the tip of your needle over to the right 1/4-inch along the folded rim of the fabric circle, and push the needle all the way back through to the right side of the fabric.
Move the tip of your needle to over to the right 1/4-inch and push it back up through the folded rim of fabric.
Move the thumb and pointer finger of your nondominant hand along the edge of the circle as you sew to continue folding over the 1/4-inch wide rim of fabric along the entire perimeter of the circle. Continue sewing the same 1/4-inch long running stitches through the folded perimeter of the circle until you come all the way around to the first stitch.
Pull the thread gently to gather the stitches. As the stitches gather, the edges of the circle will fold inward to create the yo-yo.
Sew two 1/8-inch long stitches as near to the gathered center of the yo-yo flower as possible. Pass the needle through the loop of thread of the final stitch before pulling it tight to knot the thread. Repeat the final stitch and pass the needle through the loop of thread again to secure the knot.
Cut and discard the excess thread.
