How to Make a Layered Fairy Skirt

Layered fairy skirts are shimmery costume garments that you can wear for a photo shoot or as Renaissance garb. If you purchase layered fairy skirts from costume manufacturers they may be of a lesser quality than if you make the skirts yourself. You will also save money by making your own skirts, especially if you want a durable or ornate fairy skirt. Cut your fabric into squares before you get started to make the process easier. The points of the longer squares should drape down to whatever length you prefer the skirt to be from the middle of the fabric.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold one square in half horizontally and then fold it in half vertically. The folded top corner of the fabric is the center point of the fabric. Draw a small line with chalk to mark the position of the center point. Open the square by unfolding it and set it down. Repeat on the remaining squares.

    • 2

Find the diameter measurement of the waistline using the tape measure. Draw a circle that is an equivalent diameter onto the poster board then make another circle inside the first 5/8 inch in. Cut out the second circle.

    • 3

Position the center of the circle cut out on top of the marked center point on a square. Pin the circle to the fabric.Trace around the shape of the circle and cut along the traced lines. Repeat on remaining squares.

    • 4

Set one 45 inch square down with the right side of the fabric facing you. Position the wrong side of the remaining 45- nch square over the right side of the other 45 inch square so the circles are aligned.

    • 5

Rotate the top square so it is lays in the shape of a diamond on top of the first square. You must keep the circles lined up while performing this action. Repeat the prior steps for the two remaining squares of fabric.

    • 6

Sew around the edges of the circles for both pairs of squares and position the smaller pair on top of the larger pair. Pin the edges of the circles together so all four squares are connected.

    • 7

Take the 1/3 of a yard piece of material and measure a section that matches the waistline length. Make this section 5 inches wide and cut it out. Pull the top right corner of the rectangle down to the bottom right corner and fold the strip in half.

    • 8

Fold over the unfolded bottom edge 1/2 inch and press the crease. Repeat. Lay the right side of the seam against the right side of the 5/8 inch seam allowance along the edge of the circles. Pin the edges of the fabric together and stitch the waistband section around the circles.

    • 9

Hand-sew the petals of the silk flowers to the outermost surface of the skirt.
