Instructions

    • 1

Cut two top pieces from the outside fabric, each 22 inches by 6 inches, and one main piece, 18 1/2 inches by 22 inches. From the lining fabric, cut one center piece 12 inches by 8 1/2 inches, four corners 6 inches by 6 inches, two long sides 12 inches by 6 inches, two short sides 8 1/2 inches by 6 inches, two tops 22 inches by 6 inches, one long strap 4 1/2 feet by 3 inches and four short strap pieces, each 12 inches by 2 inches.

    • 2

Take the main piece and top pieces of outside fabric. With right sides facing right sides, line up the edges. Place a pin 5 1/2 inches from each corner, sew between the pins, and set aside. Hem one edge of each lining side piece and the lining center piece by ironing down 1/4 inch, folding over and ironing down another 1/4 inch. Cardboard inserts will be slid into these edges.

    • 3

Iron 1/2 inch of each corner square down, and baste. Line up the outside edge of a corner square to the unfinished end of a side piece. Line up the hemmed edge of each side piece to the basted edge of each square. Line up the hemmed edge of the center piece to the long sides of the center piece, and attach. Attach a short side to the center piece along its unfinished edge. Baste down 1/2 inch of the other short side.

    • 4

Attach the long sides to the top pieces, leaving the top pieces unattached from the corner squares. With right sides facing right sides, lay the lining on top of the outside fabric, and pin. Sew around the entire piece, going slowly over top flaps. Flip entire piece right-side out. Top stitch around the outside, 1/4 inch from the edge. Sew everything except the hemmed edge where cardboard will be inserted.

    • 5

Fold the strap pieces in half, and iron. Sew along the edge, flip right-side out, and iron again. Tuck the ends into the tops of the sewn straps, and top stitch. Line up the long strap with the center of the outside fabric, and attach. Sew the long strap at top-stitch lines and then attach the side straps to each corner. Cut cardboard to fit in the slots you have left open, and insert it. Do not sew the edges closed so the cardboard can be removed to wash the fabric. Fold up the completed fabric, and tie the short straps on the long sides to create a box. Tuck the top flaps in, and tie the long strap across the top.
