How to Line a Scallop Hemmed Skirt

Sewing your own clothes gives you a sense of personal accomplishment and satisfaction. Besides that, if you know how to shop for fabrics, notions and patterns, you can save money and get the chance to wear something no one else has. To create a lining for a scallop-hemmed skirt, find the same pattern that you used to create the skirt. Purchase fabric-lining material from most any fabric store. This process is for someone who already knows how to sew and is not for the novice seamstress.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out the skirt pattern's front and back pieces on the fabric lining material. Ensure the pattern follows the grain of the material as per the arrow on the pattern itself.

    • 2

Pin the pattern to the fabric according to the nap of the fabric and the instructions on the pattern.

    • 3

Cut out the fabric along the edges of the pattern. Ensure that you make notches where indicated on the pattern, so you know which sides connect together properly.

    • 4

Place the front and back pieces of the lining material right sides together. Match the notches and pin together along the edges.

    • 5

Sew the skirt lining together following the requirements of the pattern. Most patterns call for a 5/8-inch seam; remove the pins as you sew.

    • 6

Turn the lining inside out so that the rough-sewed seams are now on the inside of the lining and the right side is out.

    • 7

Detach the skirt waistband from the completed skirt if already attached. Use a seam puller to rip apart the seams, taking care not to rip the fabric. Ensure there is no hem in the skirt and the scallops are the same as on the lining material. Turn the skirt inside out, so that the inside of the skirt is now on the outside.

    • 8

Slide the skirt lining over the top of the skirt so that the rough-sewed seams of the lining face the rough-sewed seams of the skirt. These will be on the inside between the lining and the skirt. The outside seams should look complete.

    • 9

Match the scallops and place a pin on each scallop.

    • 10

Sew the scallops together. Follow the edge of the scallops 1/4 inch in to create the seam. Sew slowly to ensure you get the shape of the scallops right as you sew. After sewing the scallops, use your scissors to cut up to the sewed line but not over, especially in the areas where the curves are the greatest. This will allow the fabric to lay flat after ironing without buckling when turned right side out

    • 11

Turn the skirt inside out so that the lining is now on the inside. Adjust the scallops so that the material lays somewhat flat. This may take awhile.

    • 12

Iron the scallops flat and the rest of the skirt.

    • 13

Reattach the waistband to the skirt. Lay the waistband on the outside of the skirt, right sides together and sew a seam to attach the waistband to the skirt, including the lining. Fold the waistband over and hand stitch the waistband to the inside of the skirt, or use the hem setting on your sewing machine to do so.
