How to Make a Simple Nightshirt Out of a Sheet

Sewing your own nightshirt from a sheet that you no longer need to use as bedding can save money and give you a chance to perform a craft. Most sheets are made from linen, which is an uncommon choice of fabric in making shirts because it is woven without much give or stretch. However, linen can also be beneficial when used for a nightshirt because it is thin and light and will help prevent the sleeper from overheating.

Things You'll Need

  • Model shirt
  • Fabric marker or pencil
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Spread your sheet out on a large, flat work surface and fold it in half evenly. Choose a T-shirt with a loose fit that is long enough to be worn as a nightshirt. Place it on top of the folded sheet, smoothing out any wrinkles.

    • 2

Use your fabric marker or pencil to draw the outline of the model shirt onto the sheet. Leave about 2 extra inches of fabric between the pattern you draw and the actual edge of the shirt. This will leave you room to hem the fabric, will make your nightshirt roomier and will prevent you from marking the model shirt.

    • 3

Apply several pins around the edges of the pattern you have drawn, piercing both layers of the sheet. This will prevent the layers from separating and will help you cut out two identical halves of your nightshirt.

    • 4

Remove the model shirt and cut out the pattern you have drawn. Place one hand under the fabric while you cut and monitor the position of both layers so that they do not separate.

    • 5

Pull out the pins and separate the two pieces of fabric. Align them so that their edges match up and the side of the material that you wish to be visible is on the inside.

    • 6

Use a sewing machine or a needle and thread to sew the two pieces of fabric together. Leave openings for the neck and armholes, and do not connect the bottom side of fabric.

    • 7

Fold the fabric around the armholes, neck hole and the bottom of the shirt back by about 1 inch. Sew this strip of fabric in place to create a hem. Turn the shirt inside out and snip off any leftover strings.
