How to Sew an Easy Cha Cha Skirt

Cha Cha skirts are gathered skirts with a Latin American flair. While you could spend hours sewing and layering multiple skirt pieces together to form the Cha Cha ruffles, it is easier to simply start with ruffled fabric and focus on getting the gathering right for optimal twirls.

Things You'll Need

  • Ruffled fabric
  • 1 1/2-inch elastic band
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine

Instructions

    • 1

Cut your ruffled fabric so that it is twice the width of your waist and to your desired length. Add 3 inches for bottom and top hems.

    • 2

Subtract 1 inch from your waist line. Cut the elastic to this length.

    • 3

Sew the ends of the elastic together. Then fold the elastic over and stitch the ends down to make a flat waistband.

    • 4

Hem the bottom of your ruffled fabric with a straight stitch.

    • 5

Sew the ends of the fabric together to form a loop.

    • 6

Fold and pin a 1 1/2-inch band at the top of the skirt with the elastic inside. Straight stitch the fabric across without sewing the elastic.

    • 7

Even out the elastic so that the skirt gathers evenly, and sew two or three stitches into the elastic to hold it in place.
